One of the decisions that must be made and yet still trips up many people along the way is which web hosting platform you want your server to be on. The two most frequently used choices are Linux and Windows for web servers.

FTP commands and control panel- these actions are supported by both the Windows and the Linux servers, but there are some modest differences as many FTP programs are only designed with one platform in mind so certain commands may end up not working on certain platforms. That’s the reason why occasionally you will get error messages running some of the FTP commands on your server.

Support – Linux provides a very limited support for their technology when compared with the support provided by windows and it proves to be expensive. Windows protocols are far more generic when contrasted with Linux that runs on far more particular technologies.

* Reliability and Security – Linux has the reputation of having better technology for security protocols, as it is generally utilized by system engineers and developers exclusively, while Windows proves to be the main system employed on personal computers in homes, so its security protocols are typically not so advanced. Linux Operating System is much less likely to be hacked successfully since the hackers know all too well that its defenses are better, while Windows Operating Systems are much more likely to be successfully hacked as the miscreants are on the lookout for the common flaws in these heavily used systems.

-Performance- Linux is generally thought to be a slightly better performing system primarily due to the manner in which the Linux server is packaged. The plans for Linux are more targeted to their specific customers. The flip side of that is that Windows provides an approach that is more one size fits all.

- Upgrading, if you plan to upgrade from Linux to Windows at some point then you can expect this upgrade to go easily and smoothly, you can go from Linux to Windows without much hassle at all. On the other hand, however, it can be much more difficult to say the least to convert your website form a Windows hosting system to that of Linux.
